Drupal 8 release date is November 19th 2015. That's the big day that thousands of people have been working toward. It'll be a major release - arguably the biggest change to Drupal itself in it's history. Read the details on the Drupal 8 launch article.

November 2015 is going to be big for the whole PHP community. Barring unseen major issues the PHP runtime itself will receive the first stable version of the next generation of the language with PHP 7.0.0. Now is as good time as any to get started with the move to PHP 7 by reading how to migrate from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.0.

Symfony is another project that is getting an upgrade next month. With the stable release cycle the component collection and framework are getting a bump to versions 2.8 and 3.0. The feature set of these versions is identical, but the version 3.0 introduces some restructuring and removes deprecated code. One of the new interesting features added to Symfony 2.8 and 3.0 is the Polyfill component that enables use of new features in older versions of PHP.
